Coding is touted as a 21st century skill and it is said to be a new literacy. Children as young as 5 years old can learn how to code!

  Key Points at a Glance:

  • Coding helps kids build essential life skills.
  • Teaching your kid how to code prepares them for their future.
  • Coding is a skill applicable to other industries aside IT.

Coding can teach kids a lot of things. Aside from the basics of programming, coding encourages kids to be solutions driven. Coding poses problems that can only be solved by trying, failing, devising a new plan and succeeding.

Coding classes are good for children. It is not just applicable for children who want to be programmers in the future. Learning the concept of failing and finding other solutions for a problem in coding classes is an invaluable life skill that can be applied to other aspects of your child’s life!

Coding classes can enhance your child’s drive for problem solving, critical thinking, pattern recognition, and abstract reasoning.

If your child is interested in taking a coding course, encourage them to do so. You can also tell them about the career opportunities that they can pursue in the future!

Computer Programmer

Computer programmers are proficient in the use of programming languages such as Java, C#, C++, and Python. Computer programmers create software that is functional and reliable. It is imperative that computer programmers write “clean” codes so others can take off from where they started.

Examples of computer programs are operating systems such as Apple iOS and Google Android for phones and Microsoft Windows for desktop computers and laptops.

Data Scientist

Data Scientists are knowledgeable in programming languages such as Python and R. Data scientists write programs that will help them understand data faster and better. A data scientist may not be that adept in coding but all data scientists have the skills to find patterns and derive insights from data.

This job title was just put in the spotlight recently. DJ Patil is credited to have coined the term “data scientist”. He served as the White House’s first Chief Data Scientist.

Game Developer

Game developers are proficient in programming languages also Swift for iOS mobile games and Java for Android. Kids with an interest in coding that loves video games usually see this as a viable career and as a natural progression for them.

Canada is home to 3 major game development studios such as Ubisoft, Electronic Arts and Bioware.

Mobile App Developer

Mobile app developers are knowledgeable in programming languages and they are more cognizant about user interface. They design and develop applications that will effectively run on a small and touchable screen.

Well-loved apps are mobile versions of social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.

Web Developer

One can specialize as a front-end developer or back-end web developer one can even do both!

Front-end web developers are responsible for the things that users visually interact and see. They put up the buttons, contents, images, layout and menus of a website.

Back-end web developers on the other hand focus on how the site runs on the server and how the site will deliver it’s set function to users while full-stack web developers have experience in doing both roles.

Most social media platforms have their counterpart websites. Some people actually prefer the web version because it is bigger.

There are so many industries where they can apply their knowledge in coding. Encourage your child to talk about their interests so you can help lay the foundation that they need to succeed.
